Steffens Martin Schinkel
As an architect, Karl Friedrich Schinkel (1781–1841) is considered one of finest in German history, having established a "new," patriotic German style based on the Gothic style; as a painter, draftsman, and designer of furniture, interior fittings, and stage sets, he created some of the best examples of 19th century art. His work was so admired by King Frederick William III that Schinkel acted as state architect of Prussia for nearly his entire career, designing many public buildings, palaces, and royal country estates, including the Royal Theater and Altes Museum in Berlin. So highly was Schinkel regarded that his contemporaries deemed him a genius and biographies were written about him during his lifetime. Издание на английском языке.
Wundram Manfred Palladio
With this introduction to the work of Andrea Palladio (1508–1580), TASCHEN’s Basic Architecture series shines its spotlight on one of the most influential figures in the history of Western architecture. Palladio’s “Villa Rotonda” in Vicenza became the most famous building of its kind; it influenced many later designs and remains an important source of inspiration for today’s architects. The Palladian style, distinguished by the typical Serlian windows, pillared facades resembling Roman temples, symmetrical floor plans, and elevations, was imported to other European countries and became widely known; in Great Britain it was one the important roots of 17th and 18th century architecture. In the 19th century, American architecture heavily referred to the style, as seen in, for example, Thomas Jefferson’s Monticello home. Издание на английском языке.

Koenig Gloria Eames
Nothing says modernist perfection like an Eames design. Though they are best known to the general public for their furniture, the husband and wife duo of Charles and Ray Eames (1907-78 and 1912-88, respectively) were also forerunners in the fields of architecture, industrial design, photography, and film. This book covers all the aspects of their illustrious career, from the earliest furniture experiments and molded plywood designs to the Case Study Houses to their work for Herman Miller and films such as the seminal short, Powers of Ten. de Anda Alanis Enrique X. Candela
The focus of this monograph on Spanish-born Felix Candela (1919–1997) is on modern Mexican architecture and its international influence. Conducting daring structural experiments with materials such as reinforced concrete and experimenting with shell vaulting to find new methods to save costs and material in building, Candela not only succeeded in putting his engineering knowledge into high quality constructions but also into high quality architecture. Geometry marks his impressive sculptural work, not only in the industrial buildings but also in churches, restaurants, university buildings, and sport facilities. With this book, readers are invited to discover how construction problems result in poetic and bizarre forms, and how advances in engineering can lead to expressionist architecture. Koenig Gloria Frey
In 1930, when Albert Frey (1903-1998) came to the US from his native Switzerland, he brought the influence of his mentor, Le Corbusier, with him. The innovative Aluminaire House that he developed together with A. L. Kocher was exhibited in 1932 by Henry-Russell Hitchcock and Philip Johnson in the legendary show in the Museum of Modern Art in New York “The International Style: Architecture since 1922” as one of the very few American examples of the movement. Soon after, Frey discovered the California desert, where he would settle and complete his most substantial works. Throughout his life, Frey was interested in finding new ways of building, as well as working with and doing research on prefabricated materials, the results of which he regularly published. With visionary talent, Frey built elegant, clearly structured residential houses and was the founder of the “desert modernism” style. Издание на английском языке.

Wolf Norbert Romanesque
Reaching its peak in the 11th and 12th centuries, the Romanesque movement was marked by a peculiar, vivid, and often monumental expressiveness in architecture and fine arts. The main centres were located in Italy, France, the German-language countries, Spain, and England, though the voices of Scandinavia and Eastern Europe expressed themselves distinctly in the genre, which patterned itself on antique and Byzantine art. Despite untold losses, countless Romanesque masterpieces remain preserved today. Highlights include: Frescoes in Galliano near Cantu, Sant`Angelo in Formis, Saint Chef, Saint-Savin-sur Gartempe, Lambach, San Pietro al Monte near Civate, San Clemente in Rome, from San Maria de Tahull, Berze-la-Ville, Tavant, Panteon de los Reyes in Leon, Castel Appiano, from Sigena; the golden Altar-Piece from Lisbjerg; the Bayeux Tapestry; stained glass in the Cathedral of Augsburg and Le Mans, mosaics in San Clemete, Rome, and in San Marco, Venice; colored panels and crosses from La Seo de Urgel, Sarzana, and the painted ceiling in St. Michael, Hildesheim; sculptures in Souillac, Autun, and Santiago de Compostela; examples of metalwork, of manuscripts and enamels. Rebel Ernst Self-portraits
Is a self-portrait of an artist a medium of reflection—or is it merely a black void, the “false mirror,” as the surrealist Rene Magritte entitled his 1928 painting of an eye? From the 15th century to today, this collection brings together many of the best examples of self-portraiture in art history whilst exploring these and many more questions pertaining to the art of self-reflection. Featured artists: Meister Gerlachus, Fra Filippo Lippi, Albrecht Durer, Giorgione, Parmigianino, Michelangelo, Caravaggio, Peter Paul Rubens, Salvator Rosa, Nicolas Poussin, David Bailly, Diego Da Silva Y Velazquez, Rembrandt Harmensz. Wolf Norbert Symbolism
May 1884 saw the publication in Paris of a fin de siecle novel that became a perverse sensation on the European cultural scene. A Rebours (translated both as Against the Grain and Against Nature) by Joris-Karl Huysmans was written as a seductive textbook of decadence, an antidote to the "banality" of the dominant literary styles, Naturalism and Realism. Symbolism, whose influence would endure well into the modernist era, was an artistic religion-substitute, a spiritually charged cult of beauty. A Symbolist picture or sculpture is deliberately mysterious. In place of intellectual comprehension, the work seeks to have the beholder experience its esoteric depths like a vision. It is no wonder that Symbolists created some of the most fascinating artworks of their age. Featured artists: Arnold Bocklin, Edward Burne-Jones, Puvis de Chavannes, Thomas Cole, Jean Delville, Maurice Denis, James Ensor, George Frampton, Paul Gauguin, Ferdinand Hodler, Ernst Josephson, Fernand Khnopff, Gustav Klimt, Max Klinger, Georg Kolbe, Frantisek Kupka, Frederick Lord Leighton, Jacek Malczewski, Hans von Marees, James Abbot McNeill Whistler, Piet Mondrian, Gustave Moreau, Edvard Munch, Nestor, William Degouve de Nunques, Pablo Picasso, Odilon Redon, Felicien Rops, Dante Gabriel Rossetti, Giovanni Segantini, Charles van der Stappen, Franz von Stuck, Felix Vallotton, Elihu Vedder, and Georg Frederick Watts. Lahti Louna Aalto
Finnish architect Alvar Aalto (1898–1976) was strongly influenced by both the landscape of his native country, as well as the political struggle over Finland's place within European culture. After early neoclassical buildings, Aalto turned to ideas based on Functionalism, subsequently moving toward more organic structures, with brick and wood replacing plaster and steel. In addition to designing buildings, furniture, lamps, and glass objects with his wife Aino, he painted and was an avid traveler. A firm believer that buildings have a crucial role in shaping society, Aalto once said, "The duty of the architect is to give life a more sensitive structure." About the editor: Peter Gossel runs a practice for the design of museums and exhibitions. He is the editor of TASCHEN's monographs on Julius Shulman, R. M. Schindler, John Lautner and Richard Neutra, as well as the editor of the Basic Architecture Series. About the author: Finnish-born Louna Lahti worked for the Alvar Aalto Society for many years, first as exhibition secretary and later as treasurer, before establishing her own firm in 1984. She has lectured and published extensively on visual arts and architecture. Издание на английском языке.

Hagen Rose-Marie, Hagen Rainer What Great Paintings Say
Did the Greek gods play tennis? What is the ambassador from the land of Alchemy telling us? What secrets are being told on the shores of the Island of Venus? What is a monk doing on the Ship of Fools? What Great Paintings Say has the answers to these and many other burning questions asked about the most important and famous paintings of all time. In two volumes, a selection of history`s greatest masterpieces is presented chronologically, including works by Botticelli, Breughel, Chagall, Courbet, Degas, Delacroix, Durer, Goya, Monet, Raphael, Rembrandt, Renoir, Rubens, Tiepolo, Titian, and many others. Each chapter focuses on one painting, with enlarged details and in-depth texts describing their significance. Taking apart each painting and then reassembling it again like a huge jigsaw puzzle, the authors reveal the history of art as a lively panorama of forgotten worlds. About the author: Rose-Marie Hagen was born in Switzerland and studied history as well as Romance languages and literature in Lausanne. After longer study periods in Paris and Florence, she lectured at different institutions including the American University in Washington D.C. Rainer Hagen was born in Hamburg and graduated in literature and theatre studies in Munich. He went on to work for radio and TV where his latest position has been chief editor of a German public broadcasting service. The two authors have worked together for TASCHEN on several books such as What Great Paintings Say and a monograph on Francisco de Goya. Издание на английском языке.

Serraino Pierluigi Modernism Rediscovered
The buildings burned in our memories, which to us represent the spirit of fifties and sixties architectural design, were those whose pictures were widely published in magazines and books; but what about those that got lost in the process, hardly or never appearing in publication? The exchange of visual information is crucial to the development, evolution, and promotion of architectural movements. If a building is not widely seen, its photograph rarely or never published, it simply does not enter into architectural discourse. Many buildings photographed by Julius Shulman suffered this fate, their images falling into oblivion. With this book, TASCHEN brings them to light, paying homage to California Modernism in all its forms. The abandoned files of Julius Shulman show us another side of Modernism that has stayed quiet for so many years. Bringing together nearly 250 forgotten masterpieces, Modernism Rediscovered pays tribute to these lesser known yet outstanding contributions to the modern architectural movement. It's like sneaking into a private history, into homes that have rarely been seen and hardly appreciated as of yet. About the photographer: A resident of Los Angeles since 1920, Julius Shulman documented modernist architecture in Southern California and across the globe for nearly eight decades. His images of Pierre Koenig's Case Study House No. 22 (1960) in Los Angeles and Richard J. Neutra's Kaufmann House (1947) in Palm Springs are among the most recognizable and iconic architectural photographs of the 20th century. Shulman's interest in photography developed into a career when he photographed Neutra's Kun Residence in Los Angeles with his Kodak Vestpocket camera in 1936. Neutra admired young Shulman's images and continued to commission his work. Other leading architects of the time followed suit, as did hundreds of magazines, newspapers, and book publishers. Shulman's numerous awards include the Architectural Photography Medal from the American Institute of Architects (1969), a lifetime achievement award from the International Center of Photography in New York (1998), and honorary doctorates from various academic institutions. He died on July 15, 2009 at the age of 98. About the author: Pierluigi Serraino is a practicing architect resident in the San Francisco Bay Area. The author of many books on architecture, including TASCHEN's Modernism Rediscovered, his articles and projects have appeared in Architectural Design, ArCA, Global Architecture, Hunch, Construire, Architettura, ACADIA, and Journal of Architectural Education. Издание на английском, немецком и французском языках.

Reiter Christiane The Hotel Book. Great Escapes Asia
Find your inner Zen: Enlightening destinations from India to Indonesia. Much more than a travel or holiday guide, Great Escapes Asia is first and foremost a paradisiacal photo album. Featuring opulent photographs of places that seem too perfect to be real, some of which look like James Bond movie sets or National Geographic subjects, this book will quickly convince you that an Asian sojourn is crucial to your mental and physical wellbeing. The icing on the cake is that not only do these hotels really exist, but-thanks to the pricing and contact information provided-you can succumb to their mysterious charms and book yourself a room (or houseboat, hut, or tree house, whatever the case may be). Among the gems waiting for you in Great Escapes Asia: In Kerala, India, choose between luxurious tree houses suspended 25 meters off the ground or futuristic-looking, Star Wars-style houseboats made of bamboo poles, palm leaves, and coconut fibers Are you more the resplendent-resort or budget-bungalow type? Find the best of both in Bali The best place for a delectable cup of joe: a luxury lodge and spa on a java plantation in (you guessed it) Java In the Philippines, an organic resort composed of superimposed huts whose every room affords instant access to the beach via rope ladder Tadao Ando's sprawling minimalist concrete-and-steel hotel attached to the contemporary art museum in Naoshima, Japan-the perfect place to contemplate on the relationship between humans and nature An exclusive hotel on a private island in Sri Lanka, once owned by Paul Bowles and frequented by Arthur C. Clarke and Peggy Guggenheim Thatched-roof cottages in India whose gardens overflow with mangos, nutmeg, and cardamom An Ayurvedic spa in the Himalayas where nothing matters but peace and relaxation In Myanmar, an elegant river cruise boat and a hotel on a breathtaking archeological site Chairman Mao's former getaway in Beijing, where you can rent his lavish, traditionally-decorated suite complete with adjoining concubine rooms Countries: Cambodia, China, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, Myanmar, Nepal, Philippines, Thailand, India, Sri Lanka, Vietnam About the editor: Angelika Taschen studied art history and German literature in Heidelberg, gaining her doctorate in 1986. Working for TASCHEN since 1987, she has published numerous titles on art, architecture, photography, design, travel, and lifestyle. About the author: Christiane Reiter is a freelance author based in Hamburg. She studied journalism at the University of Eichstatt and worked as a travel editor for Ringier Publishing in Munich and Zurich. She then established the travel section of the Frankfurter Allgemeine Sonntagszeitung. For TASCHEN she has also written the texts of Great Escapes Asia and Great Escapes South America. Phillips Ian New Paris Interiors
Living the life in the capital of class. Fourteen years after the first volume in the highly acclaimed Interiors series comes the first of our all-new updated titles: New Paris Interiors. The city of light is a place of persistent beauty, from the Tuileries gardens to the banks of the Seine to the heights of Montmartre. But the restrained palette of beige and stone painted by the city's noble architecture may leave one wondering if Parisians are color-impaired. Fear not-for New Paris Interiors, Angelika Taschen has brought together a selection of apartments so astonishing, so surprising, and so inspiring that you very well might not know what hit you. Think texture, think dynamic space, think eclectic, think vivid colors-these interiors are packed floor to ceiling with new ideas, unexpected pleasures, and prime examples of 21st century living. Architect India Mahdavi, French Vogue editor Carine Roitfeld, auctioneer Simon de Pury, shoemaker Christian Louboutin, gallerists Philippe Jousse and Didier and Clemence Krzentowski, fashion designer Rick Owens, and many more of the city's most interesting personalities have opened their doors for this breathtaking collection of resplendent Parisian homes. About the editor: Angelika Taschen studied art history and German literature in Heidelberg, gaining her doctorate in 1986. Working for TASCHEN since 1987, she has published numerous titles on art, architecture, photography, design, travel, and lifestyle. Texts by: Ian Phillips is editor-at-large for the German edition of Architectural Digest, and a regular contributor to Interior Design and the American edition of Elle Decor. Издание на английском, немецком и французском языках.

Great Escapes. Around the World
The world is your oyster. Our selection of the 90 best hotels around the globe. Whether you want to take a relaxing vacation in Asia, a backpacking journey in South America, a road trip in the USA, a cultural tour in Europe, or a safari in Africa, we've got the most inspiring and eclectic collection of hotels, guesthouses, boats, lodges, spas, and houseboats that you could ask for. Culled from our Great Escapes series, favorite spots include futuristic-looking, Star Wars-style houseboats made of bamboo poles, palm leaves, and coconut fibers in Kerala, India, as well as a luxury lodge and spa on a java plantation in (you guessed it) Java. An Ayurvedic spa in the Himalayas where nothing matters but peace and relaxation will certainly tempt you, or perhaps you're more the type for a lush Kenyan open-walled, thatched-roof hut fashioned from tree trunks? On a more modern vibe, oogle Gio Ponti's sleek blue and white hotel perched on the cliffs in Sorrento, Italy, and you'll yearn for a sojourn there. Other highlights include an elegant auberge in Napa Valley, California, where you can stay during your wine tasting tour, a historic ranch nestled in a Death Valley oasis, an adobe hotel in the Chilean desert, a hotel built entirely of salt in Bolivia's Uyuni salt desert, and an "ecolodge" on a natural reserve in the Amazon rain forest. Just flip through the pages of this new compilation of dreamy spots to plan your next holiday, wherever on the planet it may be. Postiglione Gennaro 100 Houses for 100 Architects
The greatest challenge in designing homes is negotiating the delicate balance between aesthetics and the personal desires of the occupants. While it`s important for the structure to reflect the vision and style of the architect, the client must ultimately feel at home beneath the roof. It is particularly interesting, therefore, to examine the homes that architects create for themselves. If houses reflect their owners` personalities, then architects` own homes are like autobiographies. Location, layout, style, lighting, artwork, furnishings-every detail adds color to the story. Each of these 100 dwellings, presented A-Z by architect, speaks more about its designer than any other building possibly could. Издание на английском языке.

Sethi Sunil Inside Asia
Zen. Soothing. Mystical. Meditative. All the most serene words in the world couldn't begin to describe the effect of Asia's most beautiful interiors. The book is "clothed" in a silk-like curry-colored fabric adorned with chrysanthemum flowers. These interiors have what it takes to transport you to a sacred place; breathe deeply, delve in, and be inspired. Our selection of the most splendid getaway havens nestled throughout the continent is sure to please even the most finicky would-be voyagers. Everything you need to know about each hotel, including pricing, services, contact information, and reading recommendations, is provided alongside opulent interior and exterior photographs. Who minds sleeping under a mosquito net when it's royally draped over your bed in a lush Kenyan open-walled hut fashioned from tree trunks and shielded from the sun by a sumptuous thatched roof? Or how about your very own South African A-frame beachside bungalow made of bamboo stalks? Seeing is believing, for sure, but even with the photos as evidence these places are not to be believed…. About the editor: Angelika Taschen studied art history and German literature in Heidelberg, gaining her doctorate in 1986. Working for TASCHEN since 1987, she has published numerous titles on art, architecture, photography, design, travel, and lifestyle. About the author: Shelley-Maree Cassidy is a writer and marketing specialist who has written two books on hotels around the world and has contributed travel articles to magazines and journals. Her particular interest in hotels stems from her family background, as her great-grandparents owned several of the first hotels in New Zealand, where she lives. Издание на английском, немецком и французском языках.
