Art Cinema
Debate over cinema's credibility as an art form is as old as the medium itself, and largely defined in terms of formal, psychological, ideological, social, or auteurist theories. To explore how artists are also using the medium to investigate a wider range of aesthetic issues that are generally related to modern and contemporary art practices, this book is broken down into 10 subgenres, including abstraction, collage, appropriation, post-surrealism, structuralism, duration, parody, and expanded cinema. The history of each subgenre is illustrated by over 300 films and filmmakers, from past masters such as Hans Richter, Man Ray, and Stan Brakhage to contemporary artists Stan Douglas, Pipilotti Rist, and Doug Aitken; from art-house legends David Lynch, Jean-Luc Godard, and Luis Bunuel to underground icons and contemporary artists Kenneth Anger, Matthew Barney, Bruce Conner, Michael Snow, Owen Land, and Paul McCarthy. About the editor: Paul Duncan has edited 50 film books for TASCHEN, including the award-winning The Ingmar Bergman Archives, and authored Alfred Hitchcock and Stanley Kubrick in the Film Series. About the author: Paul Young, a journalist and curator based in Los Angeles, has a master's degree in film directing, and has lectured on the state of video art in Berlin, Barcelona, and Madrid. He curated the exhibit "Remote Viewing: New Video Art from Europe, the Best of Loop" in Los Angeles and Madrid, and his articles have appeared in the New York Times, the Los Angeles Times, and ARTnews.

Tetart-Vittu Francoise Auguste Racinet, The Costume History
Originally published in France between 1876 and 1888, Auguste Racinet's Le Costume historique was the most wide-ranging and intelligent study of clothing ever published. Covering the world history of costume, dress, and style from antiquity through the end of the 19th century, the great work-"consolidated" in 1888 into 6 volumes containing nearly 500 plates-remains, to this day, completely unique in its scope and detail. Racinet's organization by culture and subject has been preserved in TASCHEN's magnificent reprint, as have excerpts from his delightful descriptions and often witty comments. Perusing these beautifully detailed and exquisitely colored illustrations, you'll discover everything from the garb of ancient Etruscans to traditional Eskimo attire to 19th century French women's couture. Though Racinet's study spans the globe from ancient times through his own, his focus is on European clothing from the Middle Ages to the 1880s and this subject is treated with exceeding passion and attention to detail. The Costume History is an absolutely invaluable reference for students, designers, artists, illustrators, and historians; it is also an immensely fascinating and inspirational book for anyone with an interest in clothing and style. Contents: Part I - The Ancient World (Egypt, Assyria, Israel, Persia and Phrygia, Greece, Etruscan, Greco-Roman, Rome, Barbarian Europe, Celts and Gauls) Part II - The 19th Century - Beyond the Borders of Europe (Oceania, Africa, Eskimos, North American Indians, Mexican Indians, South American Indians, China, Japan, India, Ceylon, Middle East, Orient, Turkey) Part III - Europe 400-1800 (Byzantium, France-Byzantine, Poland, Italy, Spain, Germany, France, England, Holland) Part IV - Traditional Costume Till the Late 19th Century (Scandinavia, Holland, Scotland, England, Germany, Switzerland, Russia, Poland, Hungary, Greece, Italy, Spain, Portugal, France).

Hess Barbara Abstract Expressionism
Abstract expressionism-the non-representational use of paint as a means of personal expression-emerged in America in the 1940s, inspired by the innovative work of Arshile Gorky. Considered the first art movement originating in the Americas to have a worldwide influence, abstract expressionism spawned two very different sub-categories: action painting (exemplified by Willem de Kooning and Jackson Pollock) and color field painting, made most famous by Mark Rothko. Abstract expressionists strove to express emotions and ideas directly on canvas via color, form and texture-the quality of brushstrokes and other marks, the dripping of paint, for example-while embracing accident and chance, and celebrating the very act of painting. Featured artists: William Baziotes, Helen Frankenthaler, Arshile Gorky, Adolph Gottlieb, Philip Guston, Hans Hofmann, Franz Kline, Willem de Kooning, Lee Krasner, Joan Mitchell, Robert Motherwell, Barnett Newman, Jackson Pollock, Ad Reinhardt, Mark Rothko, David Smith, Theodoros Stamos, Clyfford Still, Mark Tobey, Bradley Walter Tomlin.

A.T. Smith Elizabeth Case Study Houses
The Case Study House program (1945-1966) was an exceptional, innovative, and unique event in the history of American architecture. Concentrated on the Los Angeles area, the program oversaw the design of 36 prototype homes, and sought to make available plans for modern residences that could be built easily and cheaply during the postwar building boom. This highly experimental program generated designs that would redefine the modern home, and its profound influence on architecture-American and international-was evident during the program's existence and remains so today. This compact guide includes all the projects featured in our XL edition, with over 150 photos and plans, and a map showing the locations of all the Case Study Houses, including those no longer existant.

Gantefuhrer-Trier Anne Cubism
Pioneered by Picasso and Braque, Cubism was the first avant-garde art movement of the 20th century. Heavily influenced by the stark power of African and Native American art and sculpture, it deconstructed conventions of viewpoint and perspective, revolutionizing painting and western art in general. With its flattened, geometric shapes, overlapping, simplified forms and fragmented spatial planes, Cubism became one of the most influential and far-reaching movements in modern art. This book explains the history and theory behind Cubism, examining the work of its prime movers, and those whose work built upon it. Featured artists: Pablo Picasso, Edmond Fortier, Paul Cezanne, George Braque, Henri Le Fauconnier, Jean Metzinger, Fernand Leger, Juan Gris, Albert Gleizes, Henri Laurens, Salvador Dali, Brassai, Robert Delaunay, Raymond Duchamp-Villon.

Elger Dietmar Dadaism
A precursor to Surrealism, the Dada movement stressed the absurd and unpredictable, the illogical and chaotic, lashing out against traditional esthetics and upending artistic conventions. Emerging from the artistic and intellectual milieu of Zurich during World War I, it signaled a re-evaluation of art's cultural relevance in the shadow of industrialized war. Jean Arp, Tristan Tzara, Marcel Duchamp, and Man Ray were among the most famous proponents of Dada, creating works that dared viewers to expand their notions of what might be considered art. This book explains the impulses and theories that gave rise to Dada, the forerunner of conceptual art. Featured artists: Max Ernst, George Grosz, John Heartfield, Johannes Baader, Hannah Hoch, Raoul Hausmann, Kurt Schwitters, Johannes Theodor Baargeld, Hans Arp, Marcel Duchamp, Francis Picabia, Tristan Tzara, Man Ray.

Marzona Daniel Minimal Art
Often regarded as a backlash against abstract expressionism, Minimalism was characterized by simplified, stripped-down forms and materials used to express ideas in a direct and impersonal manner. By presenting artworks as simple objects, minimalist artists sought to communicate esthetic ideals without reference to expressive or historical themes. This critical movement, which began in the 1960s and branched out into land art, performance art, and conceptual art, is still a major influence today. This book explains the how, why, where and when of Minimal Art, and the artists who helped define it. Featured artists: Carl Andre, Stephen Antonakos, Jo Baer, Larry Bell, Ronald Bladen, Walter De Maria, Dan Flavin, Robert Grosvenor, Eva Hesse, Donald Judd, Gary Kuehn, Sol LeWitt, Robert Mangold, John McCracken, Robert Morris, Robert Ryman, Fred Sandback, Richard Serra, Tony Smith, Frank Stella, Robert Smithson, Anne Truitt.

Lamprecht Barbara Neutra
The continual refinement of human knowledge of the body and soul came to be one and the same thing for me, and the architecture of human living space its most necessary application and valuation." - Richard Neutra Born and raised in Vienna, Richard Neutra (1872-1970) came to America early in his career, settling in California. His influence on post-war architecture is undisputed, the sunny climate and rich landscape being particularly suited to his cool, sleek modern style. Neutra had a keen appreciation for the relationship between people and nature; his trademark plate glass walls, and ceilings which turn into deep overhangs, have the effect of connecting indoor and outdoor space. Neutra's ability to incorporate technology, aesthetics, science, and nature into his designs won him recognition as one of Modernist architecture's greatest talents.

Tribe Mark, Jana Reena New Media Art
Artists have always been early adopters of emerging media technologies, from Albrecht Durer and his use of the printing press in the 16th century to Nam June Paik's experiments with video in the 1960s. The advent of the internet as a popular medium catalyzed a global art movement that began to explore the cultural, social, and aesthetic possibilities of such new communication technologies-the web, CCTV surveillance cameras, cell phones, hand-held computers, and GPS devices. Focusing on New Media art as a specific art historical movement, this book explores its technologies, thematic content and conceptual strategies. New Media art often involves appropriation, collaboration, and the sharing of ideas and expressions, and frequently addresses issues of identity, commercialization, privacy, and the public domain. Many New Media artists are profoundly aware of their art historical antecedents, making reference to Dada, Pop Art, Conceptual art, Performance art, and Fluxus. Featured artists: Cory Arcangel, Jonah Brucker-Cohen and Katherine Moriwaki, Young-Hae Chang Heavy Industries, Vuk Cosic, Mary Flanagan, Ken Goldberg, Paul Kaiser and Shelly Eshkar, Jennifer and Kevin McCoy, Mouchette, MTAA, Keith and Mendi Obadike, Radical Software Group, Raqs Media Collective, RTMark, John F. Simon Jr.

Serraino Pierluigi Saarinen
"Each age must create its own architecture out of its own technology and one which is expressive of its own Zeitgeist-the spirit of the time." - Eero Saarinen Eero Saarinen (1910-1961) was one of the 20th century's great visionaries, both in the fields of furniture design (he created the ubiquitous Knoll "Tulip" chairs and tables, for example) and in architecture. Among his greatest accomplishments are monuments that shaped architecture in postwar America and became icons in themselves: Washington D.C.'s Dulles International Airport, the very sculptural and fluid TWA terminal at JFK Airport in New York, and the 630 ft (192m) high Gateway Arch of St. Louis, Missouri. Marrying curves and dynamic forms with a Modernist aesthetic, he brought a whole new dimension to architecture. About the editor: Peter Gossel runs a practice for the design of museums and exhibitions. He is the editor of TASCHEN's monographs on Julius Shulman, R. M. Schindler, John Lautner and Richard Neutra, as well as the editor of the Basic Architecture Series. About the author: Pierluigi Serraino is a practicing architect resident in the San Francisco Bay Area. The author of many books on architecture, including TASCHEN's Modernism Rediscovered, his articles and projects have appeared in Architectural Design, ArCA, Global Architecture, Hunch, Construire, Architettura, ACADIA, and Journal of Architectural Education.

Thacker Tony Cars of the 50s
For much of the world, the 1950s were a drab decade of rebuilding after the devastation of World War II. In stark contrast, the United States economy was booming, and colorful tract housing developments were flourishing across the country. And as cars became a key part of this new lifestyle, they were saturated with color too. The war sparked a technology boom in the U.S., giving automakers as well as a growing band of auto enthusiasts mechanical advancements and an unprecedented range of colors to apply to their cars. U.S. automakers were experiencing an industry-wide rejuvenation, and fins and jet engine intakes would become the styling cues that would define the decade. This compendium of colorful advertisements brings automobiles from the 50s back to life. Featured makes include: Cadillac, Chevrolet, Ford, General Motors, Lincoln, Oldsmobile, Pontiac, Studebaker, and many more. About the editor: Cultural anthropologist and graphic design historian Jim Heimann is Executive Editor for TASCHEN America, and author of numerous books on architecture, pop culture, and the history of the West Coast, Los Angeles, and Hollywood. His unrivaled private collection of ephemera has been featured in museum exhibitions around the world and dozens of books. About the author: After working as the editor of Custom Car magazine, Tony Thacker edited and published more than 50 automotive and motorcycle books for Osprey Publishing. He is currently the vice president of Marketing at the SO-CAL Speed Shop in California and has written more than a dozen books.

Ingels Bjarke Yes Is More. An Archicomic on Architectural Evolution
Yes is more is the title of an exhibition and a book presenting B.I.G. in solo format for the first time in Denmark at the Danish architecture centre. Unlike a classic architectural monograph, this book is more of a popular cultural manifesto, which is also literally the first actual documentation of B.I.G.'s trailblazing practice. As the book demonstrates, this is a practice where method, processes, instruments and the approach to the concept of architecture is precisely as wild, unfettered and result-producing as the world it is part of and greets with an unqualified Yes. Bjarke Ingels attracts highly talented co-workers, but also gifted and ambitious clients from all over the world. He does so because his own talent is above all to swiftly create intelligent synergies out of indomitable "movements", wild energies and unforeseen dynamics and transform them into hitherto unseen, surprising, functional, valuable and beautiful solutions to the specific and complex challenges in each task. The results of B.I.G.'s practice has already won awards from the Royal Academy of Fine Arts, the Special Jury Prize at the Venice Architecture Biennale, the prize for "The World's Best Housing Project", "Best Building in the Nordic Countries" as well as many other international kudos. The project and the title Yes is more is a double-edged wordplay on the dogma in modern architecture that "less is more". Less is only more as far as dimensions go - the ability to encompass as many dimensions as possible (more) with as few expenses as possible (less). As a design parameter for an aesthetic retro minimalism this only amounts to idiosyncratic architectural idiocy. Издание на английском языке.

Reiter Christiane Great Escapes Mediterranean
The Mediterranean is a mythical place, with three continents - Europe, Africa and Asia - and 21 countries sharing its coastline. These disparate cultures are all blessed with its fine climate, luxuriant fauna and flora, and the intense blues of its sea. Angelika Taschen has discovered the very best of this legendary region. Included here are the glamorous Eden-Roc on the Cote d'Azur, the stylish Monte Carlo Beach created by India Mahdavi, the hotel Stella Maris north of Portofino - accessible only by boat or trekking - and of course the famous Amalfi Coast with its numerous beautiful hotels. Add to these the tiny hotel on the small Croatian island of Lopud, the exclusive Perivolas in Santorini, and last but not least, the new branch of the Hotel Nord-Pinus in Tangier, looking out at the Straits of Gibraltar. Highlights include the Hotel Le Corbusier in the "Cite Radieuse", a Le Corbusier building in the residential district of Marseille, built in 1952; Casadelmar on Corsica, set in beautiful gardens overlooking Porto Vecchio, where every room has a sea view; and the enchanting private rocky beach Cala Piccola of the remote hotel Torre di Cala Piccola on the little-known Tuscan island of Argentario, which takes you back to 1960s Italy. Other gems include the charming La Locanda del Barbablu (with only six rooms) on the mythical island of Stromboli, set in the shadow of its active volcano; the amazing hotels in the "masserie" of Apulia, such as the Borgo San Marco in Fasano; and the beautifully designed Orloff Resort near the Old Harbour of Spetses, a small Greek Island which relaxes the eyes and calms the mind. About the editor: Angelika Taschen studied art history and German literature in Heidelberg, gaining her doctorate in 1986. Working for TASCHEN since 1987, she has published numerous titles on art, architecture, photography, design, travel, and lifestyle. Texts by: Christiane Reiter is a freelance author based in Hamburg. She studied journalism at the University of Eichstatt and worked as a travel editor for Ringier Publishing in Munich and Zurich. She then established the travel section of the Frankfurter Allgemeine Sonntagszeitung. For TASCHEN she has also written the texts for Great Escapes Asia, Great Escapes South America, and Great Escapes Mediterranean. Издание на английском, французском и немецком языках.
